Soft Tissue Massage Tense muscles and related connective tissues are associated with pain and ill health. Symptoms include limb, back, chest and neck pain. Due to our extensive understanding of the body's anatomy we adopt a wide range of approaches to effect a relaxation of the soft tissues. We will often often combine soft tissue massage techniques with stretching and inhibition (trigger points). All of these are hands on and are carefully focused to gently promote a return to good health.
Joint Manipulation When joints have a reduced range of motion in the spine and limbs, this gives rise to asymmetry, abnormal loading and forces. We apply a precise "manipulation" to the restricted areas to decrease pain muscle tension, restore the normal joint movement and body alignment. Often this gives rise to an audible "click", which is the fluid in the joint turning to gas. Our extensive training in specialised manipulation means our techniques are gentle, painless, and safe.
Joint Articulation Another technique that we use to increase joint range of motion is "articulation". We move the joints through full range of motion to stretch contracted muscles, ligaments and joint capsules, decrease tissue tension, enhances lymphatic flow and joint circulation.
MET Stretching Muscle energy is a form of stretching that uses the patient’s muscles to actively move their body against the practitioners carefully defined counterforce. This helps to improve, stretch and restore the balance to muscles and connective tissues surrounding a joint, mobilise restricted joints, improve local circulation and decrease swelling.
Functional Positional Release Functional and positional release techniques are good for very acute people that are in a lot of pain. We use gentle, slow, precise, micro-movements guiding a joint through a maze to find a pain free position. This technique helps to relax tissues and decrease muscle spasm.
Postural & Gait Analysis Due to the demands of modern living, people often unknowingly adopt poor postural patterns. We fully assess patient alignment and apply appropriate techniques to help you avoid debilitating attacks of pain. We offer easy to follow advice, regarding ergonomics, exercises and stretching to improve posture and help you manage your health.
Visceral Osteopathic Technique The internal organs facilitate key body functions, like the absorption of essential nutrients or disposal of waste products. Dysfunction can arise for a number of reasons, such as scarring due to trauma, infection, operative procedures, or disease states. Symptoms may include stomach-ache, constipation, diarrhoea, back pain, period pain and postural problems. Through a series of intricate techniques we free organs from restriction, improving neural communication, blood supply and drainage, facilitating healthy functioning.
Cranial Osteopathy Cranial Osteopathy can be described as a rhythmic flow of fluid around the brain and spinal cord, which is essential for healthy cerebral and nervous tissue. In babies symptoms may include crying, colic, reflux and sleep disturbances. In children and adults fatigue, behavioral problems, poor concentration, and headaches are common. Through a highly experienced sense of touch we gently and effectively re-balance the cranial mechanism. This encourages the release of stresses and tensions, and restores vitality and health to the body.
Strapping Strapping is a procedure that uses tape attached to the skin to physically keep in place muscles or bones at a certain position. This reduces pain and aids recovery. Strapping is usually used;
To help recover from overuse and other injuries.
Aiding people with injuries to get back into activity and support the ligaments and unstable joints by limiting excessive or abnormal movement.
Strapping also enhances proprioceptive feedback from the limb or joint.
Lymphatic Drainage Lymphatic fluid is responsible for the collection and disposal of the body's waste substances and transport immunity cells important for fighting disease. Poor drainage may give symptoms that include fatigue, headaches and recurrent ear infections. We use carefully targeted manual techniques that clear obstructions and improve the flow of lymphatic fluid improving your overall health and vitality.
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese healing system which uses the insertion of very fine sterile stainless steel needles in specific points to enhance and stimulate the body's natural healing processes.
The acupuncturist is able to notice any possible imbalance in the patient and to develop a treatment plan to assist in the treatment, prevention and pain management of several conditions.
Medical (Tuina) Massage is an essential part of the traditional Chinese medicine system. It is often used to complement or as an alternative to Acupuncture, especially when treating injuries and general muscular/skeletal ailments.
It uses advanced massage techniques with stretching and pressure/trigger point work to focus and relieve areas of discomfort and muscular tension, knots and stiffness.
Cupping therapy is an ancient Chinese form of alternative medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin. This mobilizes blood flow in order to promote healing. Suction is created using heat (fire) or mechanical devices (hand or electrical pumps).
Trigger Point Therapy Trigger points are a congested area in a muscle or fascia. These “muscle knots” can cause excruciating pain which can be felt far away from where the congested area is.
Trigger point compression is used to reduce swelling, tension, stiffness and pain while increasing range of motion, flexibility, circulation and endurance. At times it is difficult to pin point the exact trigger point location because of the referred pain it can produce. Activating the trigger point can be achieved by the therapist using pressure from the hands, knuckles or elbows and can greatly reduce muscle pain.
